Discovery Kids Playschool is dedicated to providing quality care and educational services to all children and families. Our integrative educational services allow children with developmental challenges or behavioral concerns to grow, develop and learn alongside typically developing peers, ensuring a program that embraces diversity and values the unique contributions of each child and family in our classroom community. Our open enrollment policy ensures that no child experiences discrimination in terms of acceptance into our program and our non-expulsion policy, combined with our onsite developmental and therapuetic services, ensures that each child's unique needs can be addressed without exclusionary policies common in other programs not equipped to meet the needs of children with special educational rights.
In addition to our standard playschool classes and we offer on-site services including child-centered play therapy, AutPlay, sensory enrichment therapy, and varying specialized therapeutic groups for children of all ages. We also offer cognitive tutoring services for students from preschool through sixth grade.
Child Centered Play Therapy
As a Playschool we recognize that play is the natural language of young children. This concept applies to therapeutic engagement as well as educational development. Child Centered play therapy is a non-directive therapeutic approach focusing on providing a safe, supportive environment where children can express themselves freely and work through emotional distress and traumatic experiences. Our therapist is a licensed associate clinical mental health counselor with training specific to play therapy.
AutPlay Therapy
AutPlay therapy is a specialized form of play therapy specifically adapted to meet the needs of autistic children through a combination of self selected and directive play activities specifically selected to address individual challenges. Our therapist is certified in AutPlay therapy.
Traditional behavioristic therapies for autism focus on teaching compliance and eliminating or “extinguishing” behaviors in an effort to make autistic children indistinguishable from their neurotypical peers. In contrast, AutPlay is a neurodivergent affirming approach that emphasizes the unique strengths of autistic children, focusing on interventions that specifically help with communication barriers and other challenges that impede the child’s ability to express their wants and needs and engage effectively in the world around them without expecting automatic compliance or “masking” their innate autistic responses.
Sensory Enrichment Therapy
Sensory enrichment therapy is a clinical treatment approach designed to provide a highly individualized, sensory based intervention program for children who are hypersensitive (needing high levels of sensory input), hyposensitive (experiencing sensory overload) or a combination of both. The program is neurodiversity affirming and is specifically designed to utilize brain plasticity to address underlying a\causal factors of sensory difficulties and comorbid factors such as anxiety, not focusing on teaching a child to simply tolerate or "mask" their natural physiological responses.
